What is therapy and how does it help?
Counselling and psychotherapy are often called ‘talking treatments’ because they tend to involve talking about your thoughts, feelings,
experiences and beliefs.
We often form patterns of behaviour at an earlier point in life and continue with them long after they have stopped being useful to us and may now harm or distress us.
Through weekly sessions with a trained therapist, you can develop a greater understanding of yourself, your choices and behaviour and hopefully come to make choices which will make your life work better for you.
By meeting with the same therapist each week, you work to create a ‘therapeutic relationship’ together. Many studies over decades have shown that it is the therapeutic relationship, and the trust, acceptance and shared understanding created in it which is the most significant factor in improving mental health and well-being for people.
